This sculpture is inspired by a stone that lies in front of the home of Caline Aoun in the mountains near Beirut. Aoun was fascinated by the “pristineness” of the stone, which has “experienced” several geological eras, the development of human civilization, and all of recent history, and has simply stood there unchanged. Aoun is interested in the difference between human and geological time. The sculpture of the stone is made of carbon paper. “Carbon copy” was originally the term used to designate a copy made using carbon paper.
Today “cc” refers to the function in e-mail programs enabling users to send a message to any number of addresses. By choosing carbon paper, Aoun underlines the idea that every imprint, every cast, and the use of stone as a building material is also a kind of data transfer—whereby a wall contains the human vision and history of the builder as well as the geological and material history of the stone.
